Introduction

Preparing to Install the TIFF Utilities

This version of the TIFF Utilities Toolkit has been developed and tested for Linux Red Hat 7.x, Caldera OpenLinux Server 3.1, and SuSE 7.3. If you wish to install this software on other Linux distributions please contact Faximum Software Inc. (support@faximum.com) for the latest information.

Note that the Faximum TIFF Utilities are designed to handle fax-format TIFF files only, sometimes known as TIFF-F file. For more information on the types of TIFF files that these utilities handle please see Faximum TechNote 071 http://www.faximum.com/technotes/071 .

Installation and Configuration

Installation from the Faximum Web Server

  1. Visit http://www.faximum.com/downloads/ and download the current version of the software into a temporary directory on your system. (Remember that if you have to transfer the software from the Faximum server to your system by way of an intermediary Windows system and are using ftp, then make sure that the ftp transfers are done in binary mode to prevent corruption of the files.)

Installation from CD-ROM

  1. Put the CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive

  2. While logged on in as root (the superuser), mount the CD-ROM by running (on Linux):
        mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom

  3. Copy the installation file to an appropriate temporary directory on your server, for example:
    cd /mnt/cdrom/linux-tiffu
    ls
    cp faximumtiffu-4.0-30-linux.tar /tmp

(Note that the exact name of the tar file may vary slightly so you will need to list the files in this directory -- as shown here by the ls command -- in order to determine the correct file name to use here and below).

Unpacking the Software

  1. Login as the root user or use the su command to obtain superuser privileges.

  2. To install the Faximum TIFF Utilities Toolkit software, change into the directory in which the TIFF Utilities installation file has been placed and type (of course the exact name of the faximum...tar file will depend on the name of the file you downloaded or copied from the CD above):
    tar xf faximumtiffu-4.0-30-linux.tar

Obtaining Your Software Activation Key

  1. Obtain the MAC address for your network interface card by running the ifconfig command, for example:
    /sbin/ifconfig -a eth0

  2. Which ought to return something similar to the following:

    eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:A0:C9:A8:9F:12
              inet addr:204.174.2.107 Bcast:204.174.2.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST NOTRAILERS RUNNING MTU:1500 Metric:1
              RX packets:73216 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
              TX packets:16327 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
              collisions:1134 txqueuelen:100
              RX bytes:21495687 (20.4 Mb) TX bytes:2195955 (2.0 Mb)
              Interrupt:9 Base address:0xd000

The field labelled HWaddr (in this example 00:A0:C9:A8:9F:12) contains the information you will need to register your software and obtain your software activation key.

  3. Visit http://www.faximum.com/register/ and complete the form in order to obtain your software activation key.

  4. Once you have received your activation key, copy and paste it into a file called /etc/faximum.lic and ensure that this file has read/write permissions for all.

Using the Software

tiffcat

tiffcat -o output.tif input1.tif input2.tif ...

Tiffcat will concatenate two or more TIFF-F input files into a single multi-page TIFF-F file.

tiffcompress

tiffcompress -c n -o output.tif input1.tif ...

Tiffcompress will concatenate and convert two or more TIFF-F input files into a single TIFF-F file of the specified compression type.

nCompression
1no compression
2CCITT Group 3 1-D Modified Huffman with no EOL codes
3CCITT Group 3 1-D Modified Huffman with EOL codes and no padding
67CCITT Group 3 1-D Modified Huffman with byte-aligned EOL codes
32773PackBits compression

tiffcut

tiffcut [-x n] [-y n] [-h n] [-w n] -o outputfile inputfile

Tiffcut will cut out an arbitrary rectangle from the TIFF-F input file described by the x and y coordinates and height and width specifications, where n is a distance in pixels/inches/cm (i.e. 20p/1.2i/2cm)

tiffhp

tiffhp [options] inputfile

Tiffhp converts a TIFF-F file into a PCL-5 print file suitable for printing on an HP LaserJet printer.

optionsDescription
-150use 150 dots per inch resolution (default)
-200use 200 dots per inch resolution
-300use 300 dots per inch resolution
-cgenerate compressed graphics
-olistspecify list of pages to convert
-p typeset paper type (default is letter)

valid paper types: letter, legal, executive, a4, com-10, monarc, c5, dl

The defaults for tiffhp are designed to optimise portability, not print quality. For the highest quality on most current HP LaserJet printers use the -200 -c options.

tiffls

tiffls [-s] [-l] [-l] inputfiles

Tiffls displays information about the contents of TIFF-F file(s). The -s option provides a short summary of the contents of each file. No option provides a short summary of each image. The -l option provides a detailed list of the TIFF tags for each image.

tiffps

tiffps [-p preamble] inputfiles

Tiffps converts a TIFF-F file into a PostScript Level 1 print file.

This utility requires a preamble file that not only contains fixed information needed to initialise the printer but parameters that control the printed output.

By default the command looks for the file standard.ps in the current directory but the -p parameter can be used to specify an arbitrary path to the preamble file.

The preamble file provided contains comments within it that document the various parameters that can be changed to adapt this utility to various paper sizes and printer capabilities.

tiffsplit

tiffsplit inputfile [filename-prefix]

Tiffsplit converts a single multi-page TIFF-F file into multiple single-page TIFF-F files. By default the files are named xaa, xab, etc. but the filename prefix can be changed as shown.
